Today, take an inland flight to the Tali area, and the special bus will pick you up on arrival to the eco-camp at an altitude of 2000 meters. The camp sits above a ridge overlooking the lush valley forest. It is home to Papua New Guinea’s most legendary Huli tribe. The Huli people are famous for their gorgeous and exaggerated wigs and headwear. Their dances and songs are said to be inspired by the peculiar courtship rituals of birds of paradise.

Today, the Huli tribe is one of the few local communities that still stick to their traditional beliefs. Here, a man’s wealth and status are still measured by the number of pigs, land and wives he owns. Guided by the most experienced guides, we will go deep into the village to observe and understand the details of daily life and deep ethnic beliefs of the Huli people up close.

Today, take a light plane and fly to one of the most pristine and wild areas in Papua New Guinea-the Speke River Basin. There are more than a hundred tribes living here, and canoes are still the main means of transportation for local people. We will stay in a wooden cabin camp at a ridge 300 meters high above the bank embankment, overlooking the dense tropical lowland rainforest below. The rooms are contemporarily furnished with breezy balconies and interiors are decorated with exquisite tribal totem artworks.

The tribes of the Speke River Valley are adept at using totem art to express their cultural beliefs, and exquisite carved works can be found everywhere, deeply integrated with everyday life and animistic beliefs. Walking into the village, we will meet the elders who are still carving totems by hand, and visit places used to hold sacred rituals such as rite of passage.

According to the season, weather, festivals and your physical condition, the guide will tailor a journey with the theme of exploring Melpa culture for you. Western explorers first came into contact with the Melpa people in the mid-1930 s, when they still maintained ancient farming practices dating back 9,000 years. The “big men” of the tribe cemented their position by accumulating wealth, which they then gifted all to others in a grand ceremony called “Moka”.
In the afternoon, catch a flight back to the capital Port Moresby.
